Semarang, August 21, 2023. The first day of college for the Class of 2023 at Diponegoro University began with high enthusiasm and motivation. Dr. L. M. Sabri, S.T., M.T., Head of the Department of Geodetic Engineering, delivered an inspirational message to the students to achieve excellence through competition and actively compete in the era of technological disruption. The ability to compete is considered a key element in facing future challenges.

In his address, Dr. Sabri emphasized the importance of competition in honing talents, interests, and potential. More than just measuring abilities, competitions also serve as a means to broaden horizons and build wider networks. Students are encouraged to compete on campus and outside of it.

In concrete support of the competitive spirit, the Faculty of Engineering at UNDIP has implemented a policy of academic grade enhancement through achievements in competitions. Based on Circular Letter No. 176/UN7.5.3/DL/2020 dated January 7, 2020, which was issued as a revision of the previous circular No. 2031/UN7.5.3/DL/2019 dated March 20, 2019, regarding appreciation in the academic field for outstanding students. This policy allows the first-place winners in competitions organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education to receive grade enhancements for up to 7 credits in relevant courses. Meanwhile, achievements as finalists or first-place winners in other events can be “exchanged” for grade enhancements of up to 5 credits. Before entering the odd semester of 2023/2024, the department granted course grade enhancements for 14 students through the achievement track.

However, the limited number of geodesy and geomatics competitions held by the Directorate General of Higher Education encourages students to participate in competitions at higher education institutions and in the geospatial industry. One such company that regularly organizes competitions is SuperMap Indonesia, a multinational company that develops Geographic Information System (GIS) platforms for Smart City, Land Management, Environmental Protection, Public Service, Statistics GIS, Real Estate, Facility Management, Urban Management, and more.

“The 20th SuperMap GIS Contest 2022” was a shining moment of achievement for the undergraduate students of Geodetic Engineering at UNDIP. The team consisting of Vina Candra Mulyana, Bekty Nur Fatimah, Maria Natasha M.P., and Citra Hadi Saputri secured first place in the Mapping category. Their work, titled “Drought Treat Map Analysis in IKN, Penajam Paser Utara (New Capital of Indonesia) in 2019, 2020, 2021 as Local Government Recommendation in Decision Making”, showcased superior quality in GIS analysis and application.

Achievements in sports also hold a special place in the hearts of Geodetic Engineering students at UNDIP. Adinda Karina Raihanadya Murtriandari won a bronze medal in the women’s shot put event at the PON XX Papua 2021 with a throw distance of 12.22 meters. This achievement made the province of Lampung proud and the Department of Geodetic Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, UNDIP.

Although sports achievements are difficult to use for academic grade enhancement, they can still be registered in the Diploma Supplement (SKPI). The SKPI that Adinda Karina will receive upon completing her studies will also include records of extracurricular activities and skill certifications obtained during her studies.

The Head of the Department of Geodetic Engineering at FT UNDIP, Dr. L. M. Sabri, S.T., M.T., encouraged all students to strive for excellence. He urged students to report all their activities and achievements to the Student Consultation Body led by Mrs. Shofiyatul Qoyyimah, S.T., M.S., and Mr. Muhammad Adnan Yusuf, S.T., M.Eng. These reports will then be verified by the secretary of the undergraduate program, Dr. Yasser Wahyuddin, ST., MT., M.Sc.

Relevant achievements recorded in the SKPI will be converted by the Department Head, contributing to improving students’ Cumulative Achievement Index (GPA). With full support from the Head of the Department of Geodetic Engineering at FT UNDIP, students are reminded to keep competing, even if they don’t always win every match. As stated by Carlos Slim Helu, “Competition makes you better, even if the competitor wins.”

Adinda Karina Raihanadya Murtriandari has proven that a competitive spirit and dedication to achieving excellence can have a positive impact not only on herself but also on her peers and alma mater. With the same belief and spirit, Geodetic Engineering students at UNDIP are expected to continue their glorious legacy and achieve even greater accomplishments in the future.”
