Indonesia is a country surrounded by oceans, and its maritime area is more than twice the size of its land. To meet the need for competent marine human resources, Diponegoro University established the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences in 1968, under the guidance of the late Prof. Jacub Rais. The Department of Oceanography within the Faculty is known for providing proficient graduates in Oceanography. Additionally, the Department of Geodetic Engineering, established in 2004 under the Faculty of Engineering, offers competencies in high precision and high accuracy land and sea positioning, as well as seabed mapping (Hydrography).

One day after Diponegoro University’s 172nd graduation ceremony, the Department of Geodetic Engineering organized a public lecture and Campus Hiring event in the Theater Room on the 4th floor of the Engineering Faculty Deanery. The event aimed to provide insights into the latest advancements in hydrography and oceanography science and technology and to facilitate the recruitment of fresh geodetic engineering graduates for roles in the maritime industry, particularly in offshore oil and gas exploration.

The event commenced with a speech by Dr. L M Sabri, who is the Head of the Department of Geodetic Engineering and also serves as the Chair of the Undergraduate Program in Geodetic Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, UNDIP. During his speech, Dr. Sabri shared his experience of boarding the Baruna Jaya I ship for a hydrographic survey in 2019 north of Papua in an effort to expand Indonesia’s Continental Shelf. He emphasized the importance of physical readiness, mental health, discipline, and responsibility for optimal work at sea. In his closing remarks, he expressed his utmost gratitude and appreciation for PT. Prajania Segara Utama’s willingness to conduct campus hiring for the program’s alumni, including fresh graduates.

Mr. Aditya Henla while giving his public lecture

Muhammad Aditya Henla presented a public lecture titled “Challenges of Geodetic Engineers in Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration”. Uda Henla was born in Bukit Tinggi, West Sumatra in the year 2000 and is an alumnus of the Geodetic Engineering Undergraduate Program, graduating in 2018. Even though he had only been a hydrographic surveyor at PT. Prajania Segara Utama for less than a year, Uda Henla was able to explain the importance of mastering measurement concepts and various survey equipment, both terrestrial and hydrographic. As an alumnus, he had previously worked on a thesis on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and was adept at operating drones. Uda Henla also emphasized the significance of maintaining physical and mental health to perform optimally in the hydrography and oceanography fields. He provided valuable tips for students and alumni preparing for psychometric tests. “When working on a ship, we must continuously ask the ship’s captain, our colleagues, and anyone about anything we do not know. Do not be ashamed to ask questions because there is indeed a lot we do not yet know from our time studying on campus,” he said.

The event was very lively and was attended by Bandi Sasmito, ST., MT., a lecturer in hydrographic surveying, Bu Shofiyatul Qoyyimah, ST., MS., a student affairs lecturer, at least 80 students, fresh graduates, and Bu Nia – one of the three founders of PT. Prajania Segara Utama. At the end of the public lecture, Bu Nia, who is also an alumnus of the Oceanography Undergraduate Program at Diponegoro University, emphasized the importance of physical and mental health, discipline, and responsibility for those who work offshore. Following the lecture, over 30 alumni took part in psychometric tests to recruit capable and resilient hydrographic surveyors to work with PT. Prajania Segara Utama and collaborate with national and multinational inshore and offshore companies.
